Preparing for Your Fly Fishing Adventure

On the boat I have the finest in fly fishing and light tackle equipment available. All flies, leaders, etc. are provided. You will not need to bring any equipment with you. However, if you have rods and you are comfortable with; I highly encourage you to bring them.

We will primarily fish 8-9wt rods with a weight forward floating line. I recommend a redfish or cold water redfish taper. If you're tying your own flies I recommend shrimp and crab patterns tied sparsely with lead eyes. Flies that sink quickly are easier to get in front of the fish in 3-4' water. I like tan/chartreuse patterns as well as black/purple.

As for conventional equipment, a solid 7’ Medium or Medium Heavy spinning or casting rod is appropriate.

Things to bring:

  • Polarized glasses (Possibly the most important piece of equipment besides the flyrod)
  • Sunscreen
  • Camera
  • Appropriate clothing for the conditions.  (You can’t go wrong with microfiber and goretex)
  • 8 or 9wt fly rods with weight forward floating line and your favorite flies.
  • Fishing license (Can be purchased at LA Wildlife Website. Choose code 079)
